Bing Tests Ads in AI Overviews; Our 36-Search Check Found 12 Overviews and No Ads Inside

Microsoft Bing appears to be testing sponsored results inside its Copilot AI Overviews, after a screenshot surfaced on 30 October. Our check of 36 US Bing results pages found AI Overviews on 12, none with an ad inside, though 10 of those 12 pages already carried ads.

Data card: 12 of 36 US Bing searches showed an AI Overview, none with an ad inside

Microsoft Bing appears to be testing sponsored results inside its Copilot-powered AI Overviews. Search marketer Khushal Bherwani shared a screenshot on X on 30 October showing a "Sponsored" unit inside a Bing AI Overview, and Search Engine Roundtable reported the sighting the same day, noting it could not reproduce the ads. Microsoft has not announced the placement. To see how often the test is likely to reach searchers, we pulled 40 US Bing results pages on 1 November and checked each one for an AI Overview, ads on the page and any ad unit inside the AI answer itself.

What we found

  • AI Overviews appeared on 12 of 36 usable results pages (33%). Three of the 40 pages returned off-topic results and one returned nothing, so we excluded them.
  • None of the 12 AI Overview blocks contained a sponsored unit or an ad click link in the structured data we collected. The ad Bherwani captured looks like a limited test rather than a broad rollout.
  • Ads already sit right beside the AI answer. 10 of the 12 pages with an AI Overview also carried ads, and 9 of them had ads in the top block. Only 10 of the 24 pages without an AI Overview carried any ads.
  • Product searches produced no AI Overviews at all. 0 of 11 consumer product queries such as "best mattress" or "best wireless earbuds" triggered one, while 7 of them showed ads, including large shopping ad blocks.
  • Informational queries were the most likely to get an AI Overview (7 of 11), followed by software comparisons (5 of 14).

The sighting, and what Microsoft has said

The screenshot Bherwani posted shows a sponsored listing placed within the AI Overview box at the top of a Bing results page. Bing began testing the "AI Overview" label in place of its "Copilot Search" label in late August, when Search Engine Roundtable reported a spot by Sachin Patel, so the box in the new screenshot is the same Copilot answer under its newer name.

Microsoft has not published anything about ads inside that box. Its advertising roadmap does point the same way. In an April 21 post on the Microsoft Advertising blog, Tim Frank, corporate vice president for Microsoft AI monetization, said AI Max for Search campaigns, in open pilot from May, would deliver ads on Copilot Search and Copilot Answers as well as on regular Bing results. The same post introduced Offer Highlights, ad formats for Copilot conversations, and said advertising in AI experiences works best when it "earns its place in helping people make better decisions". It framed those formats as going beyond traditional ads shown below an AI response.

Other AI search products already carry ads. Google has been expanding ads in AI Mode to new countries (see our report on Google's Q3 search revenue and AI Mode ads), and OpenAI has taken ChatGPT ads to 89 markets. Bing showing a sponsored unit inside its AI Overview would put it on the same track.

The AI Overviews we captured were short. Excluding one answer in a different layout, they cited an average of 4.2 sources (46 citations across 11 answers), and "how to change a tire" had the most, with 7, four of them YouTube videos. The answer for "what is a heat pump" cited UK government and energy charity pages even though the search ran from the US.

The pattern differs from Google. In our 150-search study of Google AI Overviews, they showed on 77% of searches. Bing's answer box appeared on a third of our pages and stayed off shopping queries entirely, where Bing filled the space with product ads instead.

What this means for SEO and PPC teams

  • Treat the sighting as a test. One screenshot and zero hits in our 36 pages mean most Bing users are not yet seeing ads inside AI Overviews. Check your own priority terms on Bing before changing budgets or forecasts.
  • Watch software and informational queries first. These are the queries where Bing shows AI Overviews and often already shows ads above them, so they are the likeliest place for an in-answer ad to appear. A sponsored unit inside the answer would push organic citations further down.
  • Check whether you are opted into AI Max. Microsoft describes AI Max as the way to reach Copilot Search and Copilot Answers. Advertisers who opted in should review search term reports for queries where Bing shows an AI Overview.
  • Track Bing AI citations in Bing's own tools. Bing Webmaster Tools reports AI performance, including its Topics Portfolio beta. Compare those numbers with clicks in the weeks after any wider ad rollout.
  • Screenshot what you see. If an ad shows up inside a Bing AI Overview for your terms, record the query, device, time and location. Microsoft has not documented the format, so first-hand examples are the best evidence available for now.

Methodology

On 1 November 2026, between 05:18 and 05:21 UTC, we collected Bing results pages for 40 queries through a commercial SERP data API, using US settings and desktop results. The queries were split into 15 software comparisons, 11 consumer product searches and 14 informational questions. For each page we recorded whether a Copilot AI Overview block was present, the number of sources it cited, the number of ads by position (top, bottom or elsewhere) and whether the AI Overview data contained any sponsored label or ad click link. We excluded four pages: one query returned no results, and three returned results unrelated to the query (for example dictionary pages for "best payroll software"), which suggests a fault in that fetch. That leaves 36 pages. One AI Overview ("how to write a cover letter") came back in a different layout with no citation list and is excluded from the citation average. The API reports ads and AI answers as separate parts of the page, so an ad that Bing rendered inside the AI Overview and labelled only visually could be missed. Results from a single fetch at one time and place may differ from what an individual user sees.

Conclusion

Bing looks to be experimenting with sponsored results inside its AI Overviews, in line with Microsoft's stated plan to sell ads on Copilot Search and Copilot Answers. On our 36 US results pages the test was not visible: AI Overviews appeared on a third of searches, none of them carried an ad inside, and none appeared on product queries. On 10 of the 12 pages with an AI Overview, though, ads already ran on the same page, so the step from ads beside the answer to ads inside it is a short one.

Has Microsoft said it will sell ads in Copilot answers?

Microsoft Advertising said in an April 21 blog post that AI Max for Search campaigns, in open pilot from May, would deliver ads on Copilot Search and Copilot Answers as well as on Bing. It has not documented ads inside the AI Overview box.
