Reddit Ranks on 30 of 36 Google SERPs We Pulled but Gets 6% of AI Overview Citations
Reddit blamed AI Overviews for falling Google referrals on its Q3 call. Our check of 36 live US results pages found Reddit still ranked on 30, at a median position of 2, but supplied only 17 of 278 AI Overview citations, while estimated US traffic fell 35% this year.

Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, .
Reddit chief executive Steve Huffman told investors on Reddit's third-quarter 2026 earnings call that search referral traffic fell meaningfully in the quarter and named Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode as the biggest cause. To test that explanation, SaaS Link Building pulled 36 live Google results pages in the United States on 4 November and tracked estimated Google organic traffic to reddit.com across nine countries since January. Reddit still ranks: it held an organic result on 30 of the 36 pages, with a median position of 2. But it supplied only 17 of the 278 sources cited in the AI Overviews on those pages, about 6%.
Key findings
- Reddit still ranks near the top. A Reddit thread appeared in the organic results on 30 of 36 searches, at a median organic position of 2. It held position 1 on 7 of them.
- An AI Overview sat above it almost every time. 31 of the 36 pages showed an AI Overview, and on 27 of those Reddit also had an organic result below it.
- Reddit is a minor AI Overview source. 17 of the 31 overviews cited one Reddit URL, and none cited more than one. That is 17 of 278 unique cited sources, or 6.1%.
- Ranking first does not guarantee a citation. On the 16 pages where Reddit held organic position 1 or 2 under an AI Overview, the overview cited Reddit 10 times.
- English-speaking markets fell hardest in third-party estimates. Estimated Google organic visits to reddit.com fell 35% in the US, 38% in the UK and 50% in India between 1 January and 1 November, against 19% to 23% in France, Germany and Spain.
What Reddit told investors
According to the earnings call transcript, Huffman said October search referrals fell by more than 1 million a week on average, that the hit landed mostly on logged-out and web traffic, and that the decline had carried into the fourth quarter. He warned that if the trend continues, total daily active uniques could fall by a low double-digit percentage from the current base of about 130 million. On Google's AI features he was blunt: "The reality is the AI Mode does not drive traffic."
He also gave a second, narrower cause. Reddit's machine-translated pages are being ranked lower, which he said mainly affects Reddit outside the US. And he confirmed that Reddit will start testing a fully logged-in experience in select non-US markets this quarter, a plan we covered when Reddit first disclosed the loss of 2.8 million US logged-out daily users.
The reported numbers back up the warning. TheStreet's write-up of the results (republished by Yahoo Finance) puts US daily active uniques at 50.7 million, down 2.5 million from the second quarter, with logged-out US users down 9% sequentially. The shares fell about 28% on 30 October as fourth-quarter guidance came in below analyst expectations.
Our SERP check: Reddit ranks, the AI Overview answers
We chose 36 everyday questions of the kind Reddit threads tend to answer: product picks, home fixes, money and career questions, and travel. The table summarises what Google showed a US desktop searcher.
| Measure (36 US searches, 4 November) | Result |
|---|---|
| Searches with an AI Overview | 31 of 36 (86%) |
| Searches with a Reddit organic result | 30 of 36 (83%) |
| Median Reddit organic position | 2 (range 1 to 6) |
| Reddit at organic position 1 | 7 of 30 |
| Reddit inside a Discussions and forums box | 16 of 36 |
| AI Overviews citing Reddit | 17 of 31 (55%) |
| Reddit share of unique AI Overview citations | 17 of 278 (6.1%) |
| Reddit at organic position 1 or 2 under an AI Overview, and cited in it | 10 of 16 |
The pattern supports the shape of Huffman's complaint. Google has not stopped ranking Reddit: on a "is a Roth IRA worth it" or "how to clean a dishwasher" search, a Reddit thread was still the first organic link. What changed is what sits above it. On 31 of 36 pages an AI Overview answered the question first, drawing on an average of nine sources, and cites Reddit as one source among many, if at all. On "how to ask for a raise", Reddit held organic position 1 and was not cited in the overview at all.
This fits what we found in earlier tests. When we checked whether Google favours big brands, Reddit and YouTube took more page-one slots than household brands. And in a separate pull of 30 AI Overviews, YouTube alone supplied 34% of citations, several times Reddit's share here.
Where the traffic fell: AI Overviews or translations?
Huffman offered two causes, and they predict different maps. If AI Overviews and AI Mode are the main driver, the loss should show up wherever those features are mature, including the US. If demoted machine translations are the main driver, the loss should be heaviest in non-English markets, where translated threads did the ranking.
The estimates point more toward the first explanation. Estimated US visits fell from about 660 million a month at the start of January to about 427 million at the start of November, a 35% drop, while estimated visits from all non-US markets combined fell 27%. France, Germany and Spain, non-English markets where translated pages would be expected to matter most, fell by about a fifth. Japan rose 7%. The three English-speaking markets in the sample fell the most.
Two cautions apply. First, these are modelled estimates built from rankings and search volumes, not Reddit's own analytics, and single weeks swing sharply (one late-September week jumped to 1.16 billion global visits before falling back). Second, a fall in estimated traffic usually reflects lost rankings or lost keywords, so the US drop suggests Reddit is also ranking for fewer queries, not only being pushed down the page. Reddit's own figures show a much smaller US decline in users (2.5 million daily uniques, or about 5%, quarter on quarter), because search is only one way people reach the site.
Google's ranking updates line up with some of the drops but do not explain them alone. Google's Search Status Dashboard lists the May 2026 core update (21 May to 2 June) and spam updates in June, August and from 24 September to 8 October. In the weekly US estimates, Reddit's slide steepened through August, while the August spam update ran from 18 to 21 August. Google has not said any of these updates targeted Reddit, and that link is speculation.
What this means for SEO teams
- Stop treating Reddit as a guaranteed traffic route. If your strategy leans on Reddit threads ranking for your topics, assume their click-through is shrinking under AI Overviews, even at position 1 or 2.
- Track AI Overview citations, not just positions. Our data shows a page can rank first and go uncited. Pull the cited sources for your top questions alongside organic ranks, as we did here.
- Watch the logged-in test. If Reddit gates more content behind login outside the US, threads may lose rankings or snippets in those markets. Expect forum and community results in those countries to change first.
- Diversify discussion sources. On our 36 searches, AI Overviews cited Facebook groups, YouTube, LinkedIn posts, university career pages and niche blogs alongside Reddit. That matches what we saw when we tested how longer queries pull in forum and video links.
Methodology
SERP data: on 4 November 2026 we collected 36 Google results pages through a SERP API (location United States, language English, desktop, top 10 organic results, with AI Overview content loaded). The 36 queries were chosen by hand as common advice and product questions. For each page we recorded whether an AI Overview appeared, every unique URL in its top-level reference list, whether any reference was on reddit.com, the first organic result whose domain or site name was Reddit and its position, and whether a Discussions and forums box contained a Reddit link. Organic position counts only standard organic listings (rank group), not AI Overviews or other features. Results come from one fetch per query and will vary by user, location and time.
Traffic data: on 4 November we pulled estimated monthly Google organic traffic for reddit.com (all subdomains) from a third-party SEO tool, weekly for all markets and the US and monthly for the UK, India, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Brazil and Japan, from 1 January to 1 November 2026. "Rest of world" is the all-markets estimate minus the US estimate. Percentages compare the first data point of 2026 with the latest one: 1 November for the monthly country series, and the week starting 2 November for the weekly US and all-markets series.
Conclusion
Reddit's claim that AI Overviews and AI Mode are eating its Google referrals holds up in the narrow sense our data can test: Reddit still ranks near the top for everyday questions, but an AI Overview now answers above it on most of them and cites Reddit as one source among many, if at all. Third-party estimates also show the steepest declines in the US, UK and India, not in the non-English markets where translated pages ranked, which suggests the translation demotion is the smaller of the two problems.
For SEO teams the lesson reaches beyond Reddit. Ranking first under an AI Overview does not guarantee a place in the answer, and visibility inside the overview is now a separate metric that needs its own tracking.
