Data card: 72 hours, the window for engagement counter updates in Google's UGC Fresh Data Program

Google has published documentation for a new UGC Fresh Data Program, a dedicated pipeline that lets approved forums and social platforms send user-generated posts and engagement signals directly to Google Search. The page was logged in the Search Central documentation changelog on October 8, 2026, together with an application form. Google says it will reply to applicants within six to eight weeks.

What changed

According to the documentation, the program is meant to help platforms show fresh, high quality and authentic user-generated content (UGC) across Search features. Approved platforms get a data ingestion pipeline through which they send content and interaction signals, so new discussions can be processed and refreshed quickly instead of waiting to be found by crawling.

Three details matter most for search teams:

  • It is a separate channel. Google describes the pipeline as built exclusively for trending UGC and independent of both the Indexing API and organic crawling of general web content.
  • There is no visibility promise. Google states that the program "doesn't guarantee that content will appear in Search."
  • The technical spec is private. Google says developer documents are shared only after a platform is accepted.

Eligibility criteria

Google lists six requirements. The table below summarises each one in our own words.

CriterionWhat Google requires
Content focusThe platform must mainly host UGC, social posts or forum discussions, on dedicated pages with stable URLs (not profile or feed pages)
Volume and audienceA high volume of UGC and a significant user base; Google publishes no numeric threshold
Content accessibilityPublic pages reachable by Googlebot and users; content behind a login or paywall is ineligible; every post must be attributable to a creator with a public profile
Technical readinessOAuth 2.0 API authentication, strictly validated JSON-LD payloads, and valid on-page schema.org markup such as SocialMediaPosting or DiscussionForumPosting with interactionStatistic
Content health and moderationNo illegal content, active moderation and a user reporting mechanism
Content freshnessContent sent as fresh as possible, ideally within minutes, plus engagement counter updates within 72 hours of creation

How it differs from the Indexing API

Site owners have asked for years for a general way to push URLs to Google. This is not that. The existing Indexing API quickstart still says the API can only be used for pages with JobPosting markup or a BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject. The UGC program does not widen that scope. It is a separate, application-only route for a narrow class of high-volume discussion platforms.

The program also asks for more than URLs. Platforms must keep sending engagement counters for 72 hours after a post is created, which means Google receives interaction data while a thread is still active. Google has not said how it uses those signals, and nothing in the documentation describes them as ranking signals, so any claim that engagement counts now affect rankings is speculation.

Context: discussion content in Search

The program sits on top of markup Google already supports. Its discussion forum structured data documentation says DiscussionForumPosting markup helps Google identify online discussions and can be used in features such as Discussions and Forums. The same changelog shows that on September 24, 2026 Google added the creator property and documented supported interaction types for interactionStatistic in VideoObject markup, another sign that Google is formalising how it reads creator and engagement data.

Search Engine Roundtable reported the launch on October 8 and noted that Google attributed it to the company rather than a named Googler. Google has not named any launch partners. On the stated timeline, a platform that applied on October 8 should hear back between November 19 and December 3, 2026.

What this means for SEO teams

  • If you run a large forum or community: check the six criteria before applying. Stable thread URLs, public creator profiles and visible moderation are prerequisites, not extras.
  • Fix markup first. Valid on-page DiscussionForumPosting or SocialMediaPosting markup with interactionStatistic is required. Validate it now with the Rich Results Test and Search Console reports, because the program builds on it.
  • Gated communities are out. SaaS companies that keep support forums behind a login will not qualify. If community threads are part of your search strategy, decide which ones can be public.
  • Most sites should change nothing. For ordinary publishers and SaaS sites, XML sitemaps, internal linking and crawl health remain the way new pages get discovered.
  • Watch the SERP if you compete with forums. If large platforms join, fresher discussion results may appear faster for trending queries. Track queries where Discussions and Forums features show for your topics.

Conclusion

The UGC Fresh Data Program gives the largest discussion platforms a direct, fast lane into Google Search for trending posts and engagement data, but only by application, only for public content, and with no promise of visibility. It does not open the Indexing API to other content types.

The first measurable effects will depend on which platforms Google accepts, and Google has not named any yet. Until it does, the practical step for community owners is to get their structured data and URL structure into shape.
