Data card: Google launches Universal Cart in US Search and Gemini, built on 60 billion plus Shopping Graph listings

Google launched Universal Cart in the United States on 15 October 2026. In a post on The Keyword, Suresh Ganapathy, Senior Director of Product Management for Consumer Shopping, said the cart is rolling out across Google Search and the Gemini app. Google previewed it earlier in the year and describes it as a single place to keep products from different retailers, watch prices and stock, and check out, powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).

What changed

Google listed four things the cart does:

FeatureWhat Google says it does
Saves products across GoogleItems saved from different retailers, in AI Mode in Search or in the Gemini app, stay in one cart between sessions
Tracks prices and stockSends notifications on price drops and when items are back in stock, using the Shopping Graph's 60+ billion continually refreshed listings
Finds savingsBuilt on Google Wallet, it suggests which saved payment card to use based on card perks and shows relevant promo codes
CheckoutPay with Google Pay inside the cart at participating stores, or transfer items to the merchant's own cart to finish on its site

Google named Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and "many Shopify merchants" as stores where shoppers can try the simplified checkout. In either checkout route, Google said, the merchant remains the seller of record and handles confirmations and customer support.

How merchants get in

The in-cart Google Pay checkout depends on UCP. Google's Merchant Center help page on UCP describes it as an open standard for agentic commerce that lets agents and systems work together from discovery through purchase and post-purchase support, compatible with Agent2Agent (A2A), Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Key points from Google's merchant documentation:

  • The UCP-powered checkout is available for select merchants through an early access program, which requires an interest form and a technical implementation.
  • Only product listings using the native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) attribute show the Buy button for this checkout.
  • The UCP integration hub in Merchant Center is rolling out gradually in the US, with Australia and Canada to follow next year. It lets merchants choose capabilities such as cart transfer to their own site, native checkout on Google and identity linking, and test them in a sandbox.
  • Google's developer guide says the hub can validate checkout and cart-transfer endpoints in sandbox and production environments.

Context

Google framed its commerce work as running on two fronts: agentic capabilities that act on a shopper's behalf, and practical tools that keep shoppers in control. Universal Cart sits on the second. The launch arrived the same day Google announced more links and new link placements in AI Mode and AI Overviews, and ahead of the holiday shopping season that Google's post is built around.

Google did not say how products are selected or ranked when a shopper adds them from AI Mode, and it did not publish adoption figures.

What this means for SEO and ecommerce teams

  • Feed quality becomes cart quality. Price and stock alerts run on the Shopping Graph. Inaccurate prices or availability in Merchant Center will reach shoppers as wrong notifications, not just wrong listings.
  • Decide on cart transfer versus native checkout. Cart transfer sends the shopper to your site to finish the order. Native checkout keeps them in Google Pay. The choice affects how much of the session your analytics sees.
  • Check promotions in Merchant Center. The cart surfaces promo codes; make sure live codes are submitted and expired ones removed.
  • Talk to your platform. Google's help page tells merchants on third-party platforms to ask those providers about their UCP integration plans.
  • Annotate 15 October 2026 in reporting so that any change in Google shopping referrals or assisted conversions can be read against the launch.

Conclusion

Universal Cart turns AI Mode and Gemini shopping sessions into a persistent, multi-retailer cart backed by Google's Shopping Graph and Google Pay. It is live in the US, while the merchant-side UCP checkout remains an early access program with a gradual Merchant Center rollout.

For merchants, the immediate work is data accuracy and a decision on whether to let Google complete the checkout or hand the cart back to their own site.
