AI Overviews Showed on 40 of 40 SEO and SaaS Queries, Citing 9 Sources but Only 1 Inline Link Each

A SaaS Link Building newsroom analysis of 40 US Google searches on 16 October 2026 found an AI Overview on every one. Across 23 fully captured overviews, the median cited 9 sources but carried 1 inline link, and YouTube was cited in 19 of them, a day after Google promised more inline links.

Data card: AI Overviews appeared on 40 of 40 SEO and SaaS queries, citing a median 9 sources and 1 inline link

Google showed an AI Overview on all 40 informational SEO and SaaS queries the SaaS Link Building newsroom checked in the United States on 16 October 2026. In the 23 overviews whose full content we captured, the median answer cited 9 sources in its reference list but carried just 1 inline link inside the text. The snapshot was taken the morning after Google said it is adding more inline links to AI Overviews and AI Mode and placing them higher in responses, so it serves as a baseline for tracking that change.

Key findings

  • 40 of 40 queries (100%) returned an AI Overview: all 20 SEO queries and all 20 SaaS and B2B queries.
  • In the 23 fully captured overviews, Google listed 214 references: a mean of 9.3 and a median of 9 per overview, ranging from 7 to 13.
  • The same 23 overviews contained 31 inline links: a median of 1 per overview. 20 of 23 had at least one; 3 had none. That is roughly one inline link for every seven references.
  • YouTube was cited in 19 of 23 overviews (83%) and accounted for 28 of 214 references (13.1%), more than any other domain.
  • The domain ranking first in the organic results was also cited in the AI Overview in 15 of 23 cases (65%).
  • About half of the cited domains (99 of 199 domain citations, counted once per overview) also appeared in that query's top 10 organic results.

Where the citations went

Video was the most consistent source type. YouTube appeared in the reference list for 19 of the 23 overviews, across definitional queries such as "what is anchor text" and "what is a crm" as well as how-to queries. Community sites were cited less often: Reddit or Quora appeared in 7 of 23 overviews and Wikipedia in 6.

Google's own pages were cited in 5 of 23 overviews (8 references in total), all of them on SEO queries, including crawl budget, canonical tags and robots.txt versus noindex. Google's developer documentation was also the most frequent target of inline links, with 4 of the 31, level with a payments company's documentation on SaaS revenue and pricing queries.

On the 14 SEO queries, every overview cited at least one SEO software vendor's blog or an SEO trade publication. On SaaS queries, citations spread across billing, analytics and CRM software vendors' explainers, finance education sites and video.

Organic rankings still matter, but are not the whole list

In 15 of 23 overviews the domain ranked first organically was among the cited sources. Overall, about half of the domains cited in an overview also ranked in that query's top 10. The other half did not rank on the first page for that query; YouTube was the most common of these, accounting for 12 of the 100.

What this means for SEO teams

  • Assume an AI Overview is present on informational queries in SEO and SaaS topics. On this sample it was universal.
  • Do not equate a citation with a link in the text. Being one of nine references is not the same as being the one inline link a reader sees mid-answer. Track both if your tooling allows.
  • Re-run the same query set. Google has said inline links will increase and move higher. A fixed list of 20 to 50 queries checked weekly will show whether that happens in your niche.
  • Consider video. YouTube was cited in more than four in five overviews here. A short explainer on a core definition can earn a citation that a text page ranking on page two does not.
  • Keep ranking work in place. The top organic domain was cited about two times in three, so organic position still feeds the overview.

Methodology

We built a list of 40 informational queries: 20 on SEO topics (for example "what is crawl budget", "how to build backlinks", "robots.txt vs noindex") and 20 on SaaS and B2B topics (for example "what is net revenue retention", "saas pricing models", "what is soc 2 compliance"). Each was run once through a commercial SERP data API against Google with location United States, language English and country US, using default desktop settings, between 03:19 and 03:20 UTC on 16 October 2026. No logged-in or personalised sessions were used.

An AI Overview was counted as present when the response contained an AI Overview block. For 17 of the 40 queries, Google loaded the overview asynchronously and the API returned only a token for a second request; those overviews are counted as present but their references and links were not captured. All per-overview metrics therefore cover the remaining 23 (14 SEO, 9 SaaS).

References are the entries in the overview's source list. Inline links are hyperlinks embedded in the overview's text blocks. Domains were normalised by removing "www." and counted once per overview when comparing with the top 10 organic results. YouTube, Reddit, Quora, Wikipedia and Google-owned domains were identified by hostname; we group other vendors by type rather than naming them.

Limitations: this is a single snapshot from one location, with a small, hand-picked query set, and AI Overview content varies between requests. Results should be read as directional, not as a measure of all Google searches.

Conclusion

On 16 October 2026, AI Overviews were present on every SEO and SaaS query we tested, and they cited plenty of sources: nine in the typical case. Inline links inside the answer were scarce, at one per overview in the median case, with video the most common cited source.

Google says inline links are increasing and moving higher in responses. We will re-run this query set to measure whether that holds.

Questions and answers

How many queries showed an AI Overview?

All 40 queries tested (20 SEO and 20 SaaS or B2B) showed an AI Overview in Google US results on 16 October 2026.

How many sources and inline links did a typical AI Overview include?

Across the 23 overviews captured in full, the median overview listed 9 references and contained 1 inline link. The totals were 214 references and 31 inline links.

Which domain was cited most often?

YouTube. It appeared in 19 of the 23 captured overviews and accounted for 28 of the 214 references.

Was the top organic result usually cited?

In 15 of 23 overviews (65%), the domain ranked first in the organic results was also among the AI Overview's cited sources.

Why were only 23 of 40 overviews analysed in detail?

For 17 queries Google loaded the AI Overview asynchronously, so the data API returned the overview's presence but not its content. Those 17 count toward presence only.
